Review

The DL Chronicles are tightly and professionally made stories as real as can be. In the first episode, Wes rushes home to a dinner party that his powerful wife is throwing. Imagine his surprise when he meets his brother-in-law, Trent, for the first time and he feels the stirrings of lust. Wes tries to bottle up his homo desires by drinking heavily during the meal. Not exactly the correct formula for repressing emotions, Wes sneaks into Trent's bed and some hot, very secret man-to-man action follows. In the second episode we meet Robert, a closeted talent agent who never sleeps with the same man twice. Robert hooks up with Austin, the manager of a health food store who's twenty years younger than him. But of course this won't be an isolated fuck; what kind of drama would that be? The two men meet again in an Internet sex chat-room, and Austin convinces him to give their relationship a chance. Robert falls hard for his new boyfriend, but now there's a young lady in the picture whose needs come first. In the third segment, a "playa" named Boo has his way with just about anything that moves and discovers that sleeping around can have some pretty nasty consequences. These first three films are so delicious that we can't wait for more of these sexy tales about men on the downlow.

Here! TV has produced some wonderful shows. Following two excellent dramas like “Dante’s Cove” and “The Lair” is not an easy thing to do but it has been done by independent directors Quincy LeNear and Deondray Gossett in “The DL Chronicles” which focuses on men who lead double lives. Dealing with men of color who are sexually duplicitous, here is a provocative look at sexual discovery including denial, love, betrayal and loss.
The first season is now available on DVD and it is absolutely amazing. The term “downlow”, as I have learned, refers to African-American men who, for appearance’s sake, are outwardly straight but secretly have sex with other men. They go out with women, marry them, have children and appear to be straight to outside society. They do not self identify as gay or bisexual and refuse to be part of the gay community or have anything to do with the gay lifestyle except for sex.
The DVD is comprised of four shows and each is a gem. Standing above the other shows, however, is the episode entitled “Robert” which gives the story of Robert Hall (Terrell Tilford), a talent agent who lives in the closet but falls for a man 20 years younger than him who runs a heath food store. The two men fall very much in love but Robert does not disclose that there is a special female in his life and keeps that secret. When the store manager becomes suspicious, things get rough and we see the evolution of a triangle with surprises along the way.
Also noteworthy is the episode entitled “Wes”. Wes Thomas is a very successful real estate broker with a beautiful wife and a very sexy brother in law. He feels an attraction for men and this makes him a very unhappy person. But when his brother in law comes for a visit, temptation takes over and the expected happens.
Gay African Americans have been
depicted, in most cases, flamboyantly in the movies and on TV and it is refreshing to see them here as masculine men whop do not deal with the old stereotypes.

I very much enjoyed most of the short films which this video offered. I was left with wanting more with a few shorts, but of course, because they are short, I was left wanting more. Well done though.

This is one of these obtrusive series that comes along, oh-so-rarely, that not only provides an insight into the workings of the gay male psyche but is entertaining as well. Credit has to be afforded to the director as well as the actors of this film series. I look forward with eager anticipation for a continuation of a further exploration of this agenda. Simply Marvellous!! So very true-to-life for not only blacks but many other men as well!!! This film is a must-have for your Collection! THE SEXUAL DUPLICITY IN THE HUMAN MALE!!!!!!
