Synopsis

Dirty Bent Bastards is a dark, twisted and outrageous parody that isn’t afraid to stick its finger up the ass of the Guy Ritchie gangster movie genre.

Maxwell, a lonely gay man, is scarred in more ways than one after he becomes victim of a horrific homophobic attack in a South London park. But fate deals him a chance to get revenge on his attacker after running into a shifty old business associate called Barry - who some might say - has unsavoury and dubious connections.

With Maxwell suffering psychologically and Barry’s business empire not being in the best of health, it occurs to them that a plan of retribution on the perpetrator could benefit them both.

Calling on the services of Rock, a disgruntled old gangster friend retired in Rio, it’s up to Maxwell and Barry to manipulate the situation into him returning to London for one last hit.

But, as events unfold, it becomes clear that everyone’s motives are not as they first appeared, and the job of punishing Maxwell’s low-life attacker takes a shocking and unexpected twist.

A fucked up, dark and outrageous black comedy that on the surface subverts the gangster movie genre, but at its heart tells a story about people’s fear of growing old, alone, and without love.

I just saw a very dark and outrageous film, “Dirty Bent Bastards”. It is the story of Matthew a lonely gay man who was victim to a homophobic attack in a park in South London which scars him physically and mentally. However, he gets the chance to avenge the attack when he meets Barry, a former business acquaintance who is in touch with some strange connections. Together Maxwell and Barry plan revenge and they know that this could be good for them. They enlist Rock, a gangster friend who lives in Brazil but Maxwell and Barry get him to come to London. However, as time progresses we see that the motives are not what we thought and Maxwell’s attacker is in for quite a surprise.
Believe it or not, this is a comedy, albeit a black comedy and is about the fear we all share of growing old, alone and unloved. The film is quite brutal and it is interesting that in a short 27 minutes it can truly upset viewers. I suppose the film is in your face and over the top but the cast is intriguing and many porn stars appear in cameos. Yet with everything, it makes its point about the anxiety we gay men feel.
The movie parodies British gangster movies and while the film appears to be quite familiar at first, we see that it is not what we thought it was going to be. Suddenly we realize that what the film is really about is the need for love and friendship.

I saw this film at The London Independent Film Festival -
I have to say - the audience were pretty hot under the collar by this mini epic - with one woman walking out at one pretty brutal scene (which doesn't end up as horrific as you first think) - and the rest of the audience suffering nervous giggles to outraged laughter in some scenes.
Sure - it's very trashy and a bit over the top - but an intriguing mix of gangsters and gay boys and loads of cameos by porn stars which I found quite novel. It's a bit clunky and rough around the edges but it has a weird kind of dark charm about it, and - if you read between the lines of dialogue - the film does make some point about the anxiety of gay men in couples who love to hate being together in long term relationships.

It has its moments if you can sit through its running time, which for a short it quite long - but you get value for money given its international locations, big cast and big heart and fabulous twists at the end.

I'd like to see more of these characters - but perhaps handled with more sympathy and humanity if the writer-director ever decided to do something more with the fucked up world he's created.

Recommend watching if you fancy something anarchic if your sitting at your PC with a beer in your hand.
