Synopsis

7 Virgins is a powerful coming-of-age tale about the exploits of sweet-faced Tano (Juan José Ballesta), a 16-year-old reform school inmate, who is given a 48-hour pass to attend his brother’s wedding. He and his neighbourhood buddies, are soon on the prowl for sex, drugs and cheap thrills. It is during this time that Tano must make some difficult choices – choices that will either force him to grow up or lead him on a spiraling road to tragedy.

With its title referring to Andalusian superstition, 7 Virgins is an energetic, in-the-streets coming-of-age drama about one teenage boy’s fateful weekend. Locked in a Seville reform school, 16-year-old Tano (Juan Jose Ballesta) is given a 48 hour pass to attend his brother’s wedding. As soon as he arrives to his tenement home, however, the sweet-faced but troubleprone Tano heads right out to meet up with his buddies, especially his best friend, the swaggering Richi (Jesus Carroza). In short order, the two shoplift at the local mall, flee from security guards, check out girls at a swimming pool, drink, take drugs, get involved in a date rape as well as participate in a vicious fight. Tano also has time for romance when he hooks up for sex with old girlfriend Patri (Alba Rodriguez). The two carefree punks soon learn that irresponsibility and teen machismo eventually breed societal retribution. While the plot is a bit familiar, it is the cinematography – capturing the washed out beauty of a southern Spanish town – as well as the especially fine, realistic acting by the young cast that help make this such an entertaining yet undeniably powerful film. It is summer in a working-class neighborhood in the south of Spain: Tano, a teenager currently serving a sentence in a juvenile reform center, receives a 48-hour leave to attend his brother’s wedding. Together with his best friend, Richi, Tano plans to enjoy his 48-hour pass to the limit, doing all the things he normally can’t: drinking, taking drugs, stealing, having sex and hanging out with his buddies. By the end of his 48-hour pass, however, Tano witnesses the collapse of all things he has taken for granted in his life: his neighborhood, his family, his friends and his loved-ones. More than just two days of freedom, Tano’s leave turns out to be a journey into maturity.
The film is an energetic and delicate look at youth. Gloriouslly photographed, director Alberto Rodriguez shows us a southern Spanish town in its washed out
Beauty and the young actors provide a realistic story in a movie that will possiblt steal your heart. The film is powerful in all of its aspects. There is a lot of energy here and the Latin music on the soundtrack enhances the plot and keeps things moving. As our hero Tano (Juan Jose Ballesta) searches for integrity, the story moves to a very moving conclusion. The audience moves right along with him.

I really love this film! I couldn't wait for the US release so I bought it from Spain.

The acting and cinematography are great and the the story is compelling. Juan Ballesta is incredibly hot and the director captures his beauty well on film.

It isn't the most uplifting film in the world but it is fast paced and holds my attention well. I would definitely recommend it.
